Architecture Books

To take advantage of this beginning of the semester I decided to write this special post about architecture books, leaving a little aside the books, some more technical as the Neufert, to bring books of theory and reflection on architecture in an aspect, the temporal and stylistic.

Architecture Books

Whether for students or for anyone who is already formed it is always good to have reference books and manuals to consult, I hope that you enjoy the post and the books!

1 – Architecture and Critical, Josep Maria Montaner. Publisher GG.

It is a book that addresses the critical architectural that architects and future architects most like to do, to criticize J – but, not just criticism for criticism, an analysis about the limits and goals of this.

Why read this book?

Because through the critical stance develop the reasoning of the great names of architecture such as Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas, Kenneth Frampton, and other famous architects who through his critical look at transformed the way of doing architecture, to planning for the city. In the world of the arts, and to understand architecture as art, each artistic expression is contrary to its predecessor, always trying to overcome the past, to innovate. This book addresses several current architecture since the NINETEENTH century, with interpretations derived from existentialism, phenomenology, iconography, structuralism and post-structuralism. (Buy Architecture Criticism)

2 – Art and Architecture: New Affinities, Julia Schulz-Dornburg. Publisher GG.

What is art and what is architecture? Often the boundaries between art and architecture are so tenuous that even confuse as is the case of Russian Constructivism, Expressionism and the school of Bauhaus are examples of movements in which art and architecture come together with common goals.

In the book Julia Schultz makes a comparison between art and architecture on an international level between 1978 and 1998, a period who that there has been an extrapolation of the art to the streets with new concepts that included the participation of the public, while at the same time that architecture became sculptural. (Buy The Book Art and Architecture)

Why read this book?

The author brings many designs of artists and famous architects, exploring trends, and in the context of movements. I consider that architecture is art, in fact, according to the concept established in Europe at the end of the EIGHTEENTH century, architecture is part of the 6 fine arts primordial that include painting, literature, music, dance, and theatre. But, either way this book presents the permeability between art forms and how this has influenced the architecture of the current times.

3 – Thinking Architecture, Peter Zumthor. Publisher GG.

This book is a compilation of numerous reflections made by the swiss architect Peter Zumthor over the past ten years, about her perception of playful architecture, the space of the objects, like this:

’The construction is the art of forming a whole with the sense from many parties. The buildings are testimonies to the human ability to construct concrete things. The true core of any task architectural is, in my view, in the act of building. It is here, where the concrete materials are assembled and erected, the architecture the imagined becomes part of the real world.’ (Peter Zumthor)

Why read this book?

Because it is a book of poetic and different from other architecture books with load theory on the architecture, this is a book of perceptions subtle about what architecture represents, memories and sensations. I think that he rescues a little of passion for architecture.

4 – After the Modern Movement – Architecture of the Half of the TWENTIETH Century, Josep Maria Montaner. Publisher GG.

A theoretical analysis on the transformations in the architectural that occurred after the Second World War, where are characterized by 3 periods: The continuity and the changes in architecture between 1945 and 1965, architecture, post modern, and the architecture presented in recent years between 1977 and 1992. The works analyzed include architects such as Álvaro Siza (Portugal), Rafael Moneo (Spain), Hans Hollein (Austria), Frank Gehry (United States), Rem Koolhaas (the Netherlands), Norman Foster (England), Renzo Piano (Italy), Jean Nouvel (France) and Santiago Calatrava (Spain).

Why read this book?

It is a book well objective and theoretical, the author examines the main changes that culminated in the adaptation of the architecture over the past decades, as the architecture won an international character, it is interesting to note the ideologies that formed the new architect. This book goes through several phases since the architecture rationalist, minimalist, expressionist, formalist, brutalist, organicista and high-tech. In addition to many other chains identified by Montaner.

5 – Atmospheres, Peter Zumthor. Publisher GG.

Again, Peter Zumthor and their reflections in the book Atmospheres shows the relationship between the work of Zumthor and the urban environment, the space that communicates and involves the neighborhood, reflecting on the role of the architect in society. This book derives from the lecture “Atmospheres Architectural Spaces – things my back”, delivered by the swiss architect in 2003.

Why read this book?

The communication skills of Peter Zumthor is unique, with a sutiliza poetic it comes to matters such as the postulates of architectural utility, comfort, beauty and solidity. Passing by Palladio and Vitruvius, as an example of an architecture rooted in the landscape embedded in the local culture. (Purchase Atmospheres)

6 – The Modernity Surpassed. Essays on contemporary architecture, Josep Maria Montaner. Publisher GG.

This book brings together 9 the texts of Josep Maria, where he discusses the main points of the modern movement, featuring the evolution and the crisis in modern architectural in several countries. It is a book highly theoretical about the modern movement. This book is a revised, expanded edition of the book of the same name published in 1997. In the new edition has been incorporated also excerpts about the fragility of modern architecture, about the problems faced in the conservation and revitalization.

In this book the architect makes an extensive analysis in the work of architects Luis Barragán (Mexico), Carlos Raul Villanueva (Venezuela), Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi and Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Brazil), Rogério Salmona (Colombia), Alvar Aalto (Finland), José Antonio Coderch (Spain) and Álvaro Siza (Portugal). (Buy This Book)

This book presents projects of sustainable architecture, are 40 projects spread around the globe, which emphasize the importance of ecological since the structures integrated in nature, the exploration of sustainable materials, to the use of traditional construction techniques adapted to current needs.

Why read this book?

Today, ecological architecture is not just a fad it is a necessity, people are beginning to feel the effects of what the environmentalists have already predicted: lack of water, energy, high temperatures and natural disasters constants. The new designs of architecture have as a premise the economics of natural resources and the least possible impact on the remaining resources. This is the necessary knowledge for new architects that need to think globally and act locally, according to the author himself. (Buy XS Eco)

The last book, also authored by Josep Montaner, treats of contemporary architecture since the beginning of the TWENTIETH century until the beginning of the XXI century. In this book, in addition to high load-theoretical, the author emphasizes the relationship between building and surroundings derived. A mix of architecture, urbanism and landscaping that governs the current projects and future projects.

Why read this book?

Because it deals with architecture recent, of the current modes of life and makes forecasts for the new architecture and the new city.Always keeping the theoretical content in the projects of great architects, urban planners and landscape architects such as Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Jane Drew, Maxwell Fry, Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer, Mies Van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto, Lina Bo Bardi, Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, Louis Kahn, Manuel Solá-Morales, Rafael Moneo, Paolo Soleri, Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas, Carlos Ferrater Rizomas, Gilles Clément, Zaha Hadid, Kazuyo Sejima, Eduardo Arroyo, Toyo Ito and Shigeru Ban. (Buy Architectural Systems)
